It was established in the mid 1800s and my department itself, the department of electrical engineering is over a 100 years old, so these people really know what they're doing( laughed a lil). But what really struck me was that they rank second in research funding and that what Im looking for...I really...(cuts me off)
VO: What kind of research are you interested in.
I: Communications is what I'm interested in, whether I'll work in optics or microwaves, I'll decide depending on what comes my way once I get there...the field is so vast...(listening intently, but cuts me off again)
VO: Which professor's research interests you?
I: Well, there Prof XXX and I had one of his text books during my third semester. He's into digital signal processing and thats something I'm very interested in. Theres also Prof YYY and he's working on optic fiber communications. Ive been doing my final year project in this field (here he looked up at me and nodded as if saying oh??) and my guide provided me with resources which included his papers. So that was really interesting. (The whole time he was listening and typing on his comp...I think he may be verifying what I was saying with the website...I dont know but thats what it looked like)

VO: well, checking my SEVIS fee still. Then probably he made some mistake. Instead of checking the online database using SEVIS ID, perhaps he was trying with the confirmation no. on the receipt. Probably he got something wrong. He was asking to himself , "What the hell I am looking at?". Then he called someone from inside asking for what's wrong and probably she told the mistake. - For this i had noticed that instead of giving a long story, saying a single line about best
admit was enough... not just for me but also a few people before me. VO tend to get annoyed if you
give them very long answers. So, keep it short. Anyway, this answer will lead you to the next
obivious question...
Q2. What other admits and rejects do you have?
- He gets impressed if you mention a few very good universities (in your reject list)... like top
20 univs in US News Ranking. He will not cross check them with the list of universiteis on your
GRE/TOEFL score sheets.

Q4. How long have you been working?

About my background first. I am a
first class student throughout though I got only `55% in my last year
of Masters in physics from Mumbai University. GRE scores are 1490 -
710-V,780-Q, 3.5-A , Toefl-280,4.5
AGRE-720,63%, no research/work experience.I applied to a total of 9
univs.Got a single admit with full aid <> to
Florida state university for PhD.
1st Q: Why US?.. Now I knew these were expected and I had planned to
prepare for them but never got around to them. So just gave him the
standard answer that Quality is better out there. Here my mind went
blank for a few seconds I stuttered for a few words. Fumbled up a bit
and invented super gravity from supersymmetry and quantum gravity.
Then came
2nd Q: Which univ and why?:
told him professors expert in my field
3rd question : whose funding?
Univ and family will provide the rest required.
4th Q: when did you complete masters, how much I got and what I have
been doing since then?
Told him
now the point to note here is he asked me a few straight ones to
check me out and then followed them up with random queries just to be
sure and pass time while he was typing. What I can say is I fumbled,
made a big mistake , was tired and had a look far from confident BUT
had all my credentials in order. So if you have everything covered
and can prepare a few Q&A's b4hand, I dont think they will cause any
hurdles. It took a whole of 2 minute without him checking a single
document. If some1 is rejected please post ur experience maybe we can
figure our why???

ME : (I showed him the broushers I brought along ) We are one of the few manuf in india that make LEDs , we have a 80% market share .

ME : Its a family business , my dad owns 25% of it , remmaing stocks are with my Grandfather and my Uncle
VO : So do you like to comeback and help in your family business
ME : (beaming with a bright smile ) Yes
VO : Ok enjoy your self (he kept the passport and ds forms , tore 1/3 of the pink slip and returned everything else inclusing the i-20 memos everything)
Then when I was about to leave
VO : Hold on , I forgot to tell you . Since you applied before 90 days , I'll be keeping your passport and will be sending it back to you only after the 90 days kicks in

I was unable to catch it….(speakers are very close yes I faced some
problems with the hearing )

(yeah my visa is guaranteed…..)
ME: I too felt the same way sir.

ME:(Wondering what to say, as I heard the graduation, completion

ME:76%
I was looking at him through glass like a hungry beggar looks at the
food in the bakery but he wasn't dare enough to look at me at all,
believe me he didn't look at me during the interview… iam afraid why?
OFFICER: How are you funding your education?
ME: sir, I had lot of savings in the bank…and about to say more but he
stopped me
OFFICER: you have lot of savings in the bank?
ME L(I felt oh nooooo) then I told quickly no sir my father has.

Me: started giving him the list…….he cuts me off after I gave

names and says, "Ok Ok"
In the meantime he stamped something on the DS forms

Me: Sure (….and gave him my sem wise mark memos)
VO:……..u will get ure passport in 2-3 days (and he just nodded
his
head, no smile on his face, no congratulations, no best of luck, no
nothing ………..But who cares, I got what I wanted)
